Along with the Beatles “Rarities” LP (reviewed on this blog) “Rock ‘N’ Roll Music” was an early introduction into the powerful rockers the Beatles released back in the sixties, which in 1980, were not that far behind me.
But here I was, as a mid-teenager, delving into their masterworks, still at school at this point in time, and apart from The Jam records I wasn’t that much interested in buying modern music. At least not enough to spend my pitiful pocket-money on such things.
Side One covers early rockers like “Dizzy Miss Lizzy”, “Everybody’s Trying To Be My Baby” and the utterly great “The Night Before”. They even have time to add some psychedelic rock with “Revolution” which would have been better served as the lead off track on Side Two.
On Side Two the party gets a little more heavy and potent with wild cuts such as “Back In The U.S.S.R.”, “Helter Skelter” and the dog-tastic “Hey Bulldog”. I also realised that The Jam had ripped-off the backing of “Taxman” for “Start”. Oh, the follies of youth. Gone for good but not gone from the memories in my head!
The LP was released on budget label MFP and probably cost me a couple of quid from Woolworth’s, Houghton-le-Spring. Every track is a stereo mix.
